Objectives
This course is designed to help the student understand the major issues associated with teaching and learning English as a second language in Quebec, to learn about the history of teaching ESL as well as current topics in the teaching of second or foreign languages. Students will become familiar with specific programs in English as a second language in Quebec schools, will be able to relate these programs to current trends in English language teaching and will be able to identify the specific types of activities that are relevant to the second language class.
Content
Resources specific to the field of teaching English as a second language will be discussed, along with general procedures for the teaching of second languages. We will examine the principal methods for the teaching of ESL in Quebec, as well as a variety of English language programs currently offered in other contexts. Other topics include: the second language as language of instruction (learning content in a second language), the nature and characteristics of learning activities, different types of activities for language learning, an examination of currently approved textbooks for secondary ESL classes in Quebec, and the use of computer and information technology in the teaching of ESL.
