Objectives
This course is designed to help students understand the process of planning listening, speaking, reading and writing activities in a second language. Students will learn about planning lessons and creating pedagogical tools for the development of the four skills at the primary and secondary levels; appreciate the importance of using texts in the learning of second languages; develop lessons that allow students to integrate their knowledge and skills in the second language; begin to learn to evaluate these lessons and determine whether students have met the required level of competency for each cycle from Primary Cycle One to Secondary Cycle Two.
Content
The nature and characteristics of listening, speaking, reading and writing in a second language. Activities associated with cognitive and affective development of these skills at all levels from beginner to advanced. Development of lesson plans and unit plans with a view to integrating these skills. The content of MEES Primary and Secondary ESL Programmes. Challenges associated with the transition of students from Primary to Secondary ESL classes, and comparison of the competencies at various levels. Information on useful websites for language teachers. Strategies for evaluating learning, in particular for oral language competencies.
